Did you enjoy the snow that we had over the past week? We don't often have 2 different winter situations in the same week. As it began to snow on Wednesday, my 4 year old and 12 year old went out to play in the snow. They ran around and just played. As the night wore on and the snow accumulated, they returned to the snow and had snowball fights and slid down the hill in our neighbor’s yard. When they went to bed, they dreamed of “no school”. Believe it or not, I can remember going to bed with the hope and anticipation of "no school". You can imagine their disappointment when they woke up the next morning and all the snow was gone. They just didn’t understand how the snow could be there one minute and gone the next. I reminded them...
...that they needed to be thankful for the time that they were able to play in the snow. As I talked to them about something as simple as the snow, I was reminded that we often approach life with the same expectations that my children saw the snow. We just assume tomorrow will come. Yet the Bible tells us that we should never boast about tomorrow. (look at Proverbs 27.1) Instead, we should live for God today. As I reflect on that, I am reminded how my decisions affect others. January is a time where so many of us make a decision to change our lifestyles - we resolve to lose weight, exercise more, or stop an unhealthy habit. I make at least one of these resolutions every year. So, I stop and ask myself - 'Why am I trying to get healthy?' One reason is for those two precious gifts that were dancing around in the snow. How about you? Look around at the people that love you the most. What greater motivation can there be?
