Who Likes To Lose?

It seems that it is just natural to not like losing. My little girl is only 4 years old. She got several games for Christmas that we had to play Christmas Day. We actually played them several times. But, it was her reaction to that game that intrigued me. When she started losing, she would begin to become disinterested in playing the game and even threatened to quit on several occasions. Being the good father, I made her at least finish the game she started (and it didn't hurt that I was winning - I never said that the desire to win was limited to my 4 year old.) But, I did wonder... ...Who likes to lose? Why is it so natural for us to want to win? Then, I thought about the fact that I was sitting in my kitchen wondering this on the day we celebrate Jesus' birth. Jesus - who said that he came to this world to serve, not to be served. Jesus - who was born in a dirty, smelly stable, not a lavish beginning by any stretch of the imagination. Jesus, a radical Savior that went against what culture would say is normal. Is it any wonder that God asks us to go against the culture of our day? Do I like to lose? Absolutely not. Do I try every day to let go of my natural tendency to focus on myself? Absolutely. My 4 year old simply reminded me of how entrenched in our very nature is the desire to focus on our own needs and how counter cultural Jesus' message really is.
