Rock Concert

I went to a rock concert last night. Well, it was actually a Third Day Concert (which is a Christian rock band) but the feel is quite the same. Something happened toward the end of the show that reminded me of just how much our culture is changing. Did you ever go to a rock concert in the past where everyone held up a lit lighter? I used to go to alot of Pink Floyd and ACDC concerts and I have held my lighter high. But last night, no one held up lighters. Instead...

they held up their cell phones. Everywhere you looked, people had their lit cell phones just as high as we use to hold our lighters. It was amazing. Now, you may be asking what does this have to do with anything. Maybe, it doesn't. It might just be a rambling thought from someone who stayed up later than normal. But, our culture has and continues to change. this was so evident last night at the concert in such a simple act. As we drove home from the concert, my wife and I talked about how the church needs to always be aware of the changing culture. Are we helping people experience a God that is real and relevant? Are people's lives changing as a result of that encounter? From the looks of it last night, I don't think they are ever going back to lighters.

1. It's Still Shining A Light ...
I, too, was at the Jars of Clay / Third Day concert in Rome. And I, too, have memories of those older concerts with lighters filling the stadiums. But when the entire crowd began to sway and the lights from hundreds of cell phones moved in unison, you knew that these people were not afraid to let their lights shine -- not only in the stadium -- but out in the world, too.

It was an awesome concert. I only wish Jars of Clay had sang some songs off of their new CD instead of just Christmas songs.
