Free Doughnuts

We went out last weekend and gave away dozens of free Krispy Kreme doughnuts at various intersections around town. First of all, for me to give away Krispy Kreme doughnuts was a big deal. But, that is not the point. You would not have believed the way people reacted to FREE DOUGHNUTS. Many of the people would simply shake their head and pass on by. Some would stop and accept the gift. Most questioned why on earth we would give anything for free. My favorite reaction was the lady who placed her hand to the side of her face to ensure that we would never make eye contact. Why do we do that? Why is it so hard for us to accept that anything is free?

God tells us in the book of Romans that his gift of salvation is a free gift. It is not our good deeds, it comes by faith in Jesus Christ. Yet, we often just shake our head and pass on by. I can remember a time in my own life where I was the person that was holding my own hand to my face as if I could somehow avoid making contact with God. I think God desires for us to respond as one young boy did when he was offered the free doughnuts. His eyes got big, he sort of rose a notch or two off of the car seat as he was excited about the possibilities, he had a big smile come across his face, and when handed the gift, he said THANK YOU!
